Basketball Recap: Mesa Ridge Takes a Loss

Mesa Ridge fought the good fight in their overtime match against Coronado on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 59-58 to the Coronado Cougars. The Grizzlies were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Cougars earlier this season, when they won 71-26.

Despite the loss, Mesa Ridge still got an impressive performance from Maya Warriax, who dropped a double-double with 21 points and ten boards. That was a full 36.2% of Mesa Ridge's points, marking the third time in a row Warriax has posted more than a third of the team's points. Quin Lewis was another key player, dropping a double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds.

Coronado was led to victory by Tati Gonzalez and Elsie Walker. Gonzalez almost dropped a double-double with 15 points and nine boards, while Walker almost dropped a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds. Those 21 points gave Walker a new career-high. Amalia Roberts also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assist of the season.

Mesa Ridge has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 8-12 record this season. As for Coronado, their victory ended an eight-game drought on the road and puts them at 2-19.

Mesa Ridge wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 74-28 loss against Palmer Ridge on the 15th. As for Coronado, a feisty cat fight will be fought as the Cougars duke it out with the Panthers at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
