Baseball Recap: Douglas County Gets the Win

Douglas County had won three straight at home, but on Saturday they bumped up to 13-8 to make it four. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 victory over the Horizon Hawks. For the Huskies, this counts as revenge for the 3-2 win the Hawks walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2025.

Westin Cheese looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jeremiah Morey, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Gunner Gienger, who went 2-for-3 with one triple and two RBI.

As for Horizon, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 11-11. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat they have suffered since May 8, 2025.

On Horizon's side, Brock Hilyard and Cooper Brennan stepped up to the plate in a big way. Hilyard went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run, while Brennan went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double. Hilyard has become a key player for Horizon: the team is 6-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 5-10 otherwise. Carter Marsh was another key player, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Douglas County will head out to face off against Smoky Hill at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Horizon, they will venture away from home to take on Lakewood at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Tigers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.86 runs per game on average), something the Hawks will no doubt try to take advantage of.
