League recap: Verdugo Hills climbs in state rankings with win

Verdugo Hills moved up to 643 from 687 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in East Valley. The Dons were able to make move up by topping Poly 42-6.

Verdugo Hills extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Parrots, 42-6. The win marks fourth in a row for the John Wallace's team.

The Dons' dynamic duo of Mark Powell and Josh Riggs proved tough for Poly to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Powell threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns and Riggs had 211 yards receiving. Carter Otte helped Verdugo Hills' passing attack out by catching two balls for 36 yards.

GENTRY CHRISTOPHER C was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 242 yards on 31 carries as Grant beat Joseph Pierro's team. CALDWELL DRAKE A also contributed to the rushing game with 43 yards on the ground.

CASTILLA-CORTEZ ANDRES made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Lancers defeated Monroe. The 5-foot-10 senior racked up two sacks.

5-foot-9 quarterback Luis Dorame of the Vikings is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1950. He has also thrown 21 touchdowns. On the ground, Grant's CHRISTOPHER C has rushed for 881 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Riggs. The Verdugo Hills star has 61 catches for 1014 yards.

The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Arleta takes on second place Verdugo Hills. Arleta lost to Sylmar last week, while the Dons bested the Parrots.

Entering into this week's contest against North Hollywood, Dorame is short just 50 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season.

Antjuan Farmer of the Don Senegal's team's is a few catches away from breaking 1,000 yards for the season. He needs only 54 receiving yards in this week's game against the Huskies to get there. So far this year, he has garnered 56 catches for 946 yards.

There should be lots of points scored when Verdugo Hills and the Mustangs face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Dons comes in having scored 291 this season, while Arleta has scored 343. Verdugo Hills scored 42 points last week as it defeated Poly.

Rudy Delatorre's team was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in the league. Earlier in the week, the Lancers defeated the Vikings 24-20.
