Baseball Recap: Greeley Central Comes Up Short

Greeley Central had lost seven straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped down to 2-18 to make it eight. They came up short against the Thompson Valley Eagles, falling 11-1. Having soared to a lofty 15 runs in the game before, the Wildcats couldn't push the score so high this time.

Greeley Central saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Paul Torres, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run. Torres has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.

As for Thompson Valley, their win ended a five-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-16. They not only won on Monday, but they posted their biggest win since April 13th (when they won 19-9).

On Thompson Valley's side, Malachi Dougherty was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Dougherty was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Sam Engelland was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Thompson Valley is 4-1 when Engelland posts two or more runs, but 1-15 otherwise. Donovan Closz was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Greeley Central will host Greeley West at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Thompson Valley, they will be playing at home against Mountain View at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
