Volleyball Recap: Avenal Triumphs

Avenal's game on Tuesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out the Firebaugh Eagles 3-2. The Buccaneers haven't had any issues with the Eagles recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive victory against them.

Avenal had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first two sets, they turned around to win the next three. The match finished with set scores of 22-25, 18-25, 25-13, 25-13, 15-10.

Yasmin Garcilazo had a dynamite game, getting 15 aces and seven digs. That's the most aces she has posted since back in September. Another player making a difference was Elisabel Serrano, who had 25 digs and 22 assists.

They weren't the only good servers: Avenal was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 24 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least five aces in eight consecutive contests.

Avenal's win bumped their record up to 18-13-2. As for Firebaugh, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 13 of their last 15 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-19 record this season.
