Coronado is 0-10 against Montwood since March of 2020 but things could change on Tuesday. Coronado will host Montwood at 6:30 p.m. Coronado has given up an average of 11.8 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Coronado came up short against Pebble Hills on Wednesday, falling 19-1. The Thunderbirds have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Coronado saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Simone Coppinger, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
Even though they lost, Coronado hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in six consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Montwood). They were the clear victors by a 25-7 margin over Franklin on Wednesday. The Rams might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 14 games by six runs or more this season.
Pia Velez made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and six unearned) runs off four hits. Velez was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with four RBI and one triple. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Jaeda Quinones was incredible, going 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three doubles. Those three doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Trinity Munoz, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI.
Montwood is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games. Coronado's loss dropped their record down to 9-15.
Tuesday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Coronado has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .477. However, it's not like Montwood struggles in that department as they've averaged .482. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Coronado suffered a grim 15-0 defeat to Montwood in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Coronado avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
