The Longmont Trojans will face off against the Niwot Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Longmont is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Longmont was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last match, but they sure didn't let that happen against Frederick on Thursday. Longmont put the hurt on Frederick with a sharp 12-2 win. While the Trojans didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Bryce Smaic spent all five innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Robbie Sekich was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2024. Cooper Magley was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
Longmont was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Frederick only posted a batting average of .267.
Meanwhile, Niwot was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-3 heartbreaker at the hands of Riverdale Ridge. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Cougars have suffered since April 25, 2024.
Charlie Shaw made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one triple. Another player making a difference was Drew Stapp, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one double.
Longmont's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Niwot, their loss dropped their record down to 3-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Longmont has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Niwot struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Longmont suffered a grim 10-1 defeat to Niwot when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can Longmont avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
