Softball Recap: Wickliffe's Undefeated Season over After Three Games

After flying high against Lutheran West last Saturday, Wickliffe came back down to earth. The Blue Devils took an 8-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mayfield Wildcats on Tuesday. The loss put an end to the Blue Devils' undefeated start to the season.

Leigha Blazetic put in work while hitting and pitching. She struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Maddie Kita was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4. Mackayla Gazdak was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.

Having lost for the first time this season, Wickliffe fell to 2-1. As for Mayfield, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wickliffe will host Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Mayfield, they will be playing in front of their home fans against North at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Rangers have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season.
