Basketball Recap: Hartington-Newcastle Takes a Loss

Hartington-Newcastle was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 47-45 heartbreaker at the hands of the Wynot Blue Devils. If the Wildcats were looking for revenge after losing 52-43 to them when the teams met back in February of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

When it comes to explaining why Hartington-Newcastle lost, don't look at Brayden Lammers. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double with 22 points and 11 boards. The dominant performance also gave Lammers a new career-high in field goal percentage (82%).

Even though they lost, Hartington-Newcastle smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 12 consecutive matches.

Devin Brummer was the offensive standout of the contest as he went 7-for-13 from beyond the arc en route to 21 points. Another player making a difference was Andrew Haberman, who posted six points and four steals.

Hartington-Newcastle's loss dropped their record down to 7-14. As for Wynot, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 15-7.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Hartington-Newcastle will face off against Creighton at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Wynot, they will challenge Laurel-Concord-Coleridge at 7:45 p.m. on February 21st. The timing is sure in Wynot's favor as the team sits on four straight wins at home while Laurel-Concord-Coleridge has been banged up by three consecutive losses on the road.
