MaxPreps Top 50 high school football scores: Cardinal Gibbons upsets No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas

Northwestern hangs on against Miami Central, sets up huge matchup against No. 1 IMG Academy next week.

Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale) pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year knocking off No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) 17-10 to improve to 3-0. The loss snapped the Raiders 16-game win streak and expect to see the Chiefs jump into the MaxPreps Top 25 rankings on Monday.

No. 9 Northwestern (Miami) beat rival No. 10 Central (Miami) in the biggest game of the week in a huge Florida showdown. Siddiq Jackson's 46-yard touchdown run in the third quarter turned out to be the difference as the Bulls held on for a 21-14 win. Up next for the three-time defending state champs is No. 1 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) on Oct. 30.

The defending 7A Alabama state champs, No. 15 Thompson (Alabaster), finished the regular season 10-0 after beating No. 26 Hoover 39-23. The Warriors have won 14 games in a row and will be the No. 1 seed when the playoffs begin on Nov. 6.

In the third and final Top 50 matchup No. 32 Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) won a defensive battle against No. 37 Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) on ESPN2, 13-7. The Huskies defense was lights out and the only points for the Sabercats came on special teams.



No. 18 Pickerington Central (Pickerington), No. 23 Archbishop Hoban (Akron), No. 36 Mentor, No. 38 Washington (Massillon) and No. 40 St. Xavier (Cincinnati) all won to advance to the fourth round of the Ohio playoffs.

Brother Martin (New Orleans) snapped No. 20 Archbishop Rummel's (Metairie, La.) 15-game win streak with a 26-23 victory on Saturday to improve to 4-0.
