Softball Recap: Monticello Magic vs. St. Francis Fighting Saints
Monticello extended their losing streak to nine on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 1-9 in the process. They lost 10-3 to the St. Francis Fighting Saints. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Fighting Saints this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-5 last Tuesday.
Taylor Marcus made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Those stolen bases marked the first that she has snagged this season.
As for St. Francis, they pushed their record up to 6-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games.
On St. Francis' side, Sydney Borchert made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. Borchert has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, St. Francis let Alexa Skogquist and Grace Keding run wild. Skogquist went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Keding went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Another player making a difference was Emily Meyer, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Monticello will head out to take on Zimmerman at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for St. Francis, they will face off against Elk River at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
