5A Region I District 3 recap Oct. 16, 2012
North Crowley moved up to 537 from 651 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region I District 3. The Panthers were able to make the jump by falling to Bowie 42-0.
Martin suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after beating Paschal. The Warriors had been ranked 24th, but fell to 27.
Kyle Hicks was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 11 carries, he ran for 185 yards as Martin bested North Crowley. Nick Smith also contributed to the rushing game with 112 yards on the ground.
Connor Huffman put up the best numbers through the air as Arlington topped Weatherford. He finished with nine completions for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Huffman's favorite target this week was Dontha Robinson, who caught four passes for 70 yards.
Rivers was the best wideout in the league this week as Bowie beat Keeath Magee's team. Rivers tallied six receptions for 107 yards. Jordan Versey helped Bowie's passing attack out by catching five balls for 57 yards.
Tony James provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Kenny Perry's team bested the Panthers. He completed 14 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 102 yards.
The Colts' Huffman and Robinson have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 5A Region I District 3 in both passing and receiving yards. Huffman has thrown for 1052 yards this season, while Robinson, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 26 catches for 494 yards. Hicks from Bob Wager's team leads the league in rushing with 884 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Volunteers take on Lamar. As it stands, Bowie is in first, while the Vikings are in fourth.
The Warriors extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Panthers, 63-9. The win marks fourth in a row for the Martin.
