Basketball Recap: Jaylinda Depina and Jazmine Burns Secure Win for Douglas Byrd

Douglas Byrd hadn't done well against Purnell Swett recently (they were 0-7 in their previous seven matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Douglas Byrd Eagles walked away with a 44-36 win over the Purnell Swett Rams. For the Eagles, this counts as revenge for the 52-25 victory the Rams walked away with the last time they faced one another back in February of 2024.

Douglas Byrd was led to victory by Jazmine Burns and JayLinda Depina. Burns almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine boards, while Depina posted 11 points and eight rebounds. Burns has been hot recently, having posted nine or more rebounds the last three times she's played. Shania McLucas was another key player, putting up seven points along with five assists and five steals.

Douglas Byrd smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

Douglas Byrd's win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 7-5. As for Purnell Swett, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-10 record this season.

Douglas Byrd will venture away from home to face off against Jack Britt at 6:00 p.m. on January 24th. Purnell Swett has already played their next matchup (against Red Springs), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
