Football Recap: Hawthorne Cougars vs. South Spartans

Hawthorne extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping them down to 1-4. They took a blow against the South Spartans, falling 48-0. The Cougars lost against the Spartans in their previous head to head back in September of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was even wider than the 34-24 score last time.

As for South, their win ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-2. Their offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

South was led to victory by Chase Spahr and Nathan Kerekes. Spahr threw for 155 yards and a pair of TDs, while Kerekes rushed for 91 yards and two scores on only ten carries. Kerekes got the majority of those rushing yards when he took off on a run that went for an incredible 61 yards. Carter Adams got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Hawthorne and South could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Cougars will challenge Leuzinger at 7:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (878 vs. 46). Meanwhile, South (ranked 622nd) will meet West (ranked 310th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
