Nation’s leading scorer put up 500 to 1,000 shots everyday growing up and has scored at least 40 points in six games this season.

Senior Gabe Davenport is a walking bucket at Zion Christian Academy (Columbia, Tenn.). The 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior guard is the nation's leading scorer at 41.9 points per game.

Davenport has piled up at least 40 points in six of his team's 13 contests, including a career-high 64 on Nov. 21.

That 64-point game started an incredible stretch where he scored at least 40 points in four straight contests between Nov. 21 and Dec. 6. In that span he shot 56 percent from the field and 52 percent from the 3-point line.

"The rim felt wide open during that stretch of games," Davenport said. "From a confidence standpoint I always feel like the ball is going in, otherwise I wouldn't take the shot. Even when I miss I am going to come down and shoot again."

Davenport also averages 5.5 rebounds, 4.7 steals and 3.8 assists per game. On Dec. 3 he had a 44-point, 10-steal double-double.
"I have worked really hard the last couple of years to be more gritty on the defensive side of the ball," Davenport said. "Being active vocally and physically on the court and leading by example is important."

Davenport started playing basketball in the third grade and hasn't put the ball down since. Whether it's humid in the summer, or cold and brisk in the Tennessee winter, the basketball never stopped bouncing in his driveway. He would take about 500-1,000 shots each day to work on his shooting form.

"To this day I train the same, shooting shots every night outside after practice, focused on game shots and situations," Davenport said.

For shooting, Davenport watches how Stephen Curry moves around the court to find the best spot to get a shot off. Davenport also tries to incorporate how Kyrie Irving creates shoots and gets to the rim.

"Kyrie's ability to to finish is something I work at but is very hard to do," Davenport said.

The senior averaged 14.8 points per game as a junior at Columbia Academy (Columbia, Tenn.). Since getting to Zion Christian Academy this year, he has scored at least 26 points in all 13 of his team's games. On top of the 64-point game and three 50-point contests, he has gone over 30 points on 11 occasions and has scored more than 40 points six times.

"My teammates are great," Davenport said. "They find me and help create these opportunities and my coach gives me the green light to just play my game."

He recently received an offer to play basketball at Division III University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. For now, he has 12 games left in the regular season before the postseason begins.

"Playing these last few years in high school has been great," Davenport said. "My coaches, teammates and the kids I play against have been a big part of my high school experience and I'm thankful to have had the opportunity."
