Basketball Recap: Smithville Gets the Win

Smithville hadn't done well against La Grange recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. In a tight game that could have gone either way, the Smithville Tigers made off with a 61-60 victory over the La Grange Leopards. For the Tigers, this counts as revenge for the 56-52 win the Leopards walked away with the last time they faced one another back in January of 2024.

Despite the defeat, La Grange saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Campbell Cooper Sg 2027 dropped a double-double on 23 points and ten rebounds. La Grange is 12-4 when Cooper Sg 2027 posts eight or more rebounds, but 4-5 otherwise. Kylie Trlicek was another key player, putting up 11 points along with six steals and five assists.

Smithville has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-8 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.2 points per game. As for La Grange, with the loss, they broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 16-9.

Smithville and La Grange should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. Smithville (ranked 538th) will meet Giddings (ranked 1274th) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Similarly, La Grange will challenge Bellville at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday up 679 places (439 vs. 1118).
