Softball Recap: Kermit Comes Up Short

Kermit dropped their record down to 12-11 on Thursday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins on the road. They came up short against the Alpine Bucks, falling 11-1. The Yellow Jackets were red-hot at the plate heading into the game (they scored no less than ten runs in the three contests prior), but the Bucks' pitcher proved too tough.

As for Alpine, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 14-14 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games.

For Alpine's part, Kody Hawkins was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 14 over five innings pitched. Those 14 strikeouts gave Hawkins a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs, and two RBI.

In other batting news, Alpine let Zariah Galvan and Rikki Vega run wild. Galvan went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple, one run, and one RBI, while Vega got on base in all three of her plate appearances with three runs. Another player making a difference was Kacy Hawkins, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.

Kermit does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Alpine, they will square off against Lamesa at 5:00 p.m. on the 25th. The Tornadoes have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.7 runs per game on average), something the Bucks will no doubt try to take advantage of.
