Softball Recap: Caney Creek Comes Up Short

After flying high against Cleveland on Friday, Caney Creek came back down to earth. The Caney Creek Panthers took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the New Caney Eagles on Saturday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Panthers of the 5-3 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Avery Castaneda was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching six innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.

Castaneda wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Alyssa Manuel, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3. Angie Baker also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.

Caney Creek's loss dropped their record down to 3-12. As for New Caney, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-6-2.

Coming up, Caney Creek will host College Park at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. College Park will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Caney Creek surely won't give up without a fight. As for New Caney, they are taking a road trip to challenge Willis at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Willis' pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so New Caney's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
