Softball Recap: South Decatur Gets the Win

South Decatur took a 13-run defeat the last time they faced off against North Decatur, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cougars had just enough and edged out the Chargers 8-6. This was a revenge game for the Cougars: when they faced off against the Chargers on Monday, they had to take a 13-0 loss.

Riley Benge was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 11 innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off 14 hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of her seven plate appearances with three stolen bases and one RBI. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, South Decatur got a massive performance out of Dalilah Martin, who got on base in five of her seven plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Raegan Benge was another key player, getting on base in all seven of her plate appearances with three stolen bases and one RBI.

South Decatur pushed their record up to 10-9 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for North Decatur, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-12 record this season.

South Decatur does not have any more games scheduled as of now. North Decatur has already played their next game (against Batesville), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
