Basketball Recap: Pomona Takes a Loss

Pomona managed to keep up with D'Evelyn until halftime on Wednesday, but things quickly went downhill from there. The Pomona Panthers lost 71-47 to the D'Evelyn Jaguars. The loss was just more heartbreak for the Panthers, who fell 55-53 when the teams last met back in January of 2023.

When it comes to explaining why Pomona lost, don't look at Dj Hawkins. Despite the final result, he posted 26 points in addition to five boards and three steals. The match was Hawkins' fourth in a row with at least 15 points.

D'Evelyn's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Denzel Bogyah led the charge by going 5-for-11 to rack up 21 points and six rebounds. The dominant performance gave Bogyah a new career-high in boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Clinton Kessey, who dropped a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Pomona has been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-15 record this season. D'Evelyn's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-21.

Coming up, Pomona will host Silver Creek at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Pomona is facing Silver Creek at the right time seeing as Silver Creek is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for D'Evelyn, they will head out on the road to take on Prospect Ridge Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
