League recap: Monroe Area extends winning streak with victory over Walnut Grove

AAAA Region 8 recap October 22, 2013

Adding to the longest winning streak in AAAA Region 8 this week, Monroe Area beat Walnut Grove 75-0. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.

The Warriors lost to Monroe Area 75-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Ethan South was a passing and rushing force as Madison County fell to Stephens County. South's favorite target this week was Malik Freeman, who caught 3 passes for 61 yards.

South was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 89 yards on 3 carries as the Red Raiders lost to the Indians. Teammate Xavier Duncan added to the ground attack by rushing for 32 yards.

Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Lanier's Canyon Cook and Devin Valentine have proven to be a lethal combination. Cook has thrown for 853 yards this season, while Valentine has 14 catches for 379 yards. Stanton Truitt from Matt Fligg's team leads the league in rushing with 913 yards.

The Hurricanes' Truitt needs only 87 yards against Madison County next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 67 carries Truitt has accumulated 913 yard this year.

An important game coming up in AAAA Region 8 this week will be when Lanier takes on Stephens County. At the moment, Bill Wells' team is in third, while Travis Noland's team is in fourth.

The Indians made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 4,852 from 5,500. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 35-13 victory over Chris Smith's team last week.
