Softball Recap: Marcellus Picks Up Sixth Consecutive Victory

Marcellus took a 16-run defeat the last time they faced off against Chittenango, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Mustangs came out on top in a nail-biter against the Bears on Sunday, sneaking past 8-6. The victory was nothing new for the Mustangs as they're now sitting on six straight.

Kendall LaManche spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and three unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 14 Ks. Those 14 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.

On the hitting side, Maddy Richer and Jordan O'Connor did most of the damage at the plate: Richer went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI, while O'Connor got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI. That home run marked the first that Richer has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Janzen Long, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs.

Marcellus pushed their record up to 11-2-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Chittenango, their loss ended an eight-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-3.

Looking ahead, Chittenango will challenge Central Valley Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Marcellus will be paying especially close attention to the Bears' contest: after the Bears face off against the Thunder, they'll take on Marcellus again at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
