Softball Recap: Tuesday's Victory Is Charleston's Fourth in Last Five Outings

After losing to Mattoon the last time they met, Charleston decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Trojans walked away with a 5-2 win over the Greenwave on Tuesday.

Railyn Cox made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Cox was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

In other batting news, Lainie Keefer was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, one triple, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. Rylee Shrader was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

Charleston lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Charleston is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.2 runs over those games. As for Mattoon, their loss dropped their record down to 3-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Charleston will square off against St. Anthony at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Trojans will need to watch out since the Bulldogs have now posted at least ten runs in their last three games. As for Mattoon, they will head out on the road to take on Shelbyville at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Rams have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.5 runs per game on average), something the Greenwave will no doubt try to take advantage of.
