2A Region 3 recap Sept. 26, 2012
Kennedy moved up to 218 from 261 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 2A Region 3. A 22-6 win over O'Bannon helped the Hornets improve their standing.
Strayhorn led the league in scoring this week after putting up 59 points on East Union.
Kennedy's dynamic duo of Ladaris Johnson and jeremy Gant proved tough for the Green Wave to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Johnson threw for 48 yards and Gant had 33 yards receiving. Eugene Pruitt helped Kennedy's passing attack out by catching one ball for 15 yards.
Mekel Gaston was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 87 yards on 12 carries as West Tallahatchie bested O'Bannon. Robert Taylor also contributed to the rushing game with 19 yards on the ground.
5-foot-8 quarterback Johnson of the Hornets is the league leader in passing yards this season with 194. He has also thrown two touchdowns. On the ground, the Mustangs' Greg Caston has rushed for 795 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Ladarious Walker. The Broad Street star has six catches for 107 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Strayhorn takes on the Choctaws. At the moment, Thomas Skinner's team is in first, while West Tallahatchie is in fourth.
There should be lots of points scored when the Mustangs and the Choctaws face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Strayhorn comes in having scored 131 this season, while West Tallahatchie has scored 200. The Mustangs scored 59 points last week as they beat the Urchins.
Kennedy made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 9,707 from 11,777. The advance stemmed from a 22-6 victory over Mack Sampson's team last week.
