Baseball Recap: Wachusett Regional Takes a Loss

Wachusett Regional started off well but failed to capitalize on an early lead against Central. They fell just short of the Golden Eagles by a score of 6-5 on Monday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Mountaineers of the 1-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

Matt Moreno was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out six batters over 6.1 innings while giving up five earned runs off three hits.

At the plate, Ryan Flaherty made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three RBI and one double. Those RBI were his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Brendan Mariani, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

Wachusett Regional's loss dropped their record down to 2-4. As for Central, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-3 record this season.

Wachusett Regional is taking a road trip to challenge Leominster at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Blue Devils' pitching crew has only allowed 2.6 runs per game this season, so the Mountaineers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Central, they will take on Holyoke at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
