Preview: Cross Trojans vs. St. John's Islanders
Cross is 10-0 against St. John since January of 2016, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Cross Trojans will head out on the road to take on the St. John's Islanders at 6:00 p.m. Cross will be strutting in after a victory while St. John's will be coming in after a defeat.
Cross scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They breezed by Charleston Math & Science at home to the tune of 68-14. Cross has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven contests by 22 points or more this season.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cross to victory, but perhaps none more so than Lauren Middleton, who scored 21 points along with six steals and five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Zhania Fredricks, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 steals.
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, St. John's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They were beaten by Military Magnet Academy 93-29. While losing is never fun, St. John's can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 178th, while Military Magnet Academy is ranked 36th).
Cross' victory bumped their record up to 14-4. As for St. John's, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-10.
Cross took their win against St. John's in their previous matchup back in January by a conclusive 58-36. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cross since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
