Softball Recap: Glendale Nitros vs. Hoover Tornados
Glendale can finally bid farewell to their five-game losing streak thanks to their game on Wednesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Hoover Tornados a 5-0 shutout. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Glendale also won the last time the pair played back in April of 2023.
Hoover's batters probably weren't too happy with Natalie Minkler, who pitched a no hitter and racked up 16 Ks (she gave up a single walk). Minkler has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive pitching appearances.
At the plate, Brooke Aldrete was excellent, scoring a run while going 1-for-1. Another player making a difference was Sky Smoot, who scored a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
On Hoover's side, Evelyn Ortiz spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on five hits.
Even though they lost, Hoover always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Glendale only posted an OBP of .435.
Glendale's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 7-15. As for Hoover, they dropped their record down to 7-9 with that loss, which was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season.
Glendale will take on Leuzinger at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hoover does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
