Genoa-Kingston and Oregon are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Cogs will challenge the Hawks at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Genoa-Kingston is coming into the game on a five-game losing streak.
Tuesday just wasn't the day for Genoa-Kingston's offense. They lost 17-0 to Stillman Valley on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Oregon came into Tuesday's match having lost six straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. Everything went their way against Lutheran on Tuesday as they made off with an 18-0 win. Considering the Hawks have won 14 contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Giselle Zavala was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Zavala was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one double. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Kaelin Shaffer was a standout: she fired off three triples, four runs, and one double while going 4-for-4. Those three triples gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Madison Shaffer, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI.
Oregon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .581. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Genoa-Kingston's loss dropped their record down to 10-19-1. As for Oregon, their record now sits at 19-10.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Genoa-Kingston hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.7 home runs per game. However, it's not like Oregon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Genoa-Kingston came up short against Oregon in their previous matchup back in April, falling 11-8. Can the Cogs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
