Basketball Recap: Sunset Falls Despite Big Games from Gleidy Flores and Esmeralda Santana

Sunset was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. The matchup between them and the Coral Park Rams didn't end well, with the Sunset Knights falling 47-29. The Knights were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Rams earlier this season, when they won 38-36.

Sunset's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Esmeralda Santana, who posted eight points and five rebounds, and Gleidy Flores, who almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds. That's the most points Santana has posted since back in December of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Jazlyn Fleitas, who had two points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Sunset smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Coral Park's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Greisy Perdomo led the charge by putting up 18 points and five steals. Perdomo is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least four every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Elisabel Diconzo, who went 5 of 7 on her way to 12 points.

Sunset's defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Coral Park, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 3-6.

Sunset won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Don Soffer Aventura at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Coral Park, they will face off against Varela at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
