No. 3 University runs away from No. 4 Shadow Mountain in GEICO Nationals opener

Blue chip junior prospect Vernon Carey Jr. led the way Thursday morning as No. 3 University (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) ran away from No. 4 Shadow Mountain (Phoenix, Ariz.) for a 75-63 in the opener at GEICO High School Nationals in New York City.

The eight-team tournament will crown a national champ to close the 2017-18 high school basketball season.

Carey, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward regarded as the No. 2 prospect in the Class of 2019 by 247Sports, scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

University (34-1) led by just four points entering the fourth quarter but extended the advantage to as many as 15 late in the game. The Sharks have won 17 in a row and are coming off a successful run in Florida's Class 5A state tournament.

Arizona's Class 4A state champions, Shadow Mountain ended the season 25-2.
