Howell typically has all the answers at home, but on Wednesday Hartland proved too difficult a challenge. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Highlanders, sneaking past 8-7. This was a revenge game for the Eagles: when they faced off against the Highlanders on Wednesday, they had to take a 7-3 loss.
Jamie Smokovitz spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and four unearned) runs on 11 hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Reese Dunny was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Addy Caten also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Hartland has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-6-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.4 runs over those games. As for Howell, their defeat ended a nine-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 21-12-1.
Hartland and Howell will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next games. The next time the Eagles see the field they'll take on Clio at 4:00 p.m. on the 27th. As for Howell, their break will end when they face Lakeland at 4:00 p.m. on the 28th.
