Softball Recap: Wink Comes Up Short

Wink dropped down to 10-4 on Friday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Ozona Lions by a score of 5-3. The Wildcats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Lions apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in March of 2025.

Viviana Flores spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and racked up 11 Ks. Those 11 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.

On the hitting side, Teagan Butterfield made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Liliana Mendoza also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

As for Ozona, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-9 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games.

On Ozona's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Katy Vargas gave up just two earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits.

At the plate, Mercedes Perez was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March of 2025.

While Wink had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
