Basketball Recap: Shandiin Johnson Key Part of a Team Effort in Redskins Win

Red Mesa lost to Fredonia back in January of 2024, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Tuesday. The Red Mesa Redskins enjoyed a cozy 50-35 victory over the Fredonia Lynx.

Red Mesa's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Shandiin Johnson led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 21 points and nine boards. Those nine rebounds gave Johnson a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Shyla Pipkin, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 13 boards.

Red Mesa was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Fredonia only posted four assists.

Despite the loss, Fredonia had strong showings from Danni Waters, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Neveya Estrada, who posted 12 points. Waters has become a key player for Fredonia: the team is 10-4 when she posts at least eight boards, but 1-3 otherwise.

Red Mesa is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a massive bump to their 12-11 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 29.6 points per game. As for Fredonia, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-7.

Red Mesa will welcome Rock Point at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Rock Point will roll in looking for their seventh straight win, something Red Mesa surely won't give up without a fight. Fredonia does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
