Baseball Recap: John Marshall Comes Up Short

John Marshall and Spring Valley pushed the score to 15-9 the last time they played Spring Valley, but on Thursday defenses reigned supreme. The Monarchs fell just short of the Timberwolves by a score of 2-1. The Monarchs' loss continues a trend for the squad, making it three in a row.

Hunter Coulter spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits. He is becoming a predictor of John Marshall's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 2-1 (and 3-5 when he doesn't).

At the plate, John Marshall saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mason Markonich, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

John Marshall now has a losing record of 5-6. As for Spring Valley, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 10-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. John Marshall will venture away from home to take on Morgantown at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Spring Valley, they will head out to face off against University at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The Hawks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.15 runs per game on average), something the Timberwolves will no doubt try to take advantage of.
