Upset win over top-seeded Dos Pueblos puts Newport Harbor into the state finals.
An upset in the Southern California regionals provided the only newcomer to the Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings this week.
Newport Harbor, which had performed well at the Durango Tournament earlier this year and was ranked No. 1 in the CIF-Southern Section for part of the season, upended No. 1 seed Dos Pueblos to advance to the state finals. Newport Harbor will take on Salinas in the Division I championship game at the Bren Center in Irvine. Newport Harbor moves into the top 10 by virtue of the win. Dos Pueblos doesn’t drop far, however, since it has a previous win over Berkeley Prep, the Florida 3A state champion.
The only remaining state tournament is in California and it concludes Dec. 5.
