Baseball Recap: Mentor Comes Up Short in High-Profile Contest with St. Ignatius

Mentor faced St. Ignatius in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Cardinals fell 5-2 to the Wildcats. The Cardinals were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Mentor got a good showing from Will Link, who pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Link has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Mentor saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jack Vanhimbergen, who went 1-for-2 with one run.

With the loss, Mentor broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 16-5. As for St. Ignatius, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-4.

Looking ahead, Mentor will venture away from home to face off against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for St. Ignatius, they will welcome University School at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
