The Devine Warhorses will head out on the road to challenge the Jefferson Mustangs at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday. Devine's pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so Jefferson's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Last Tuesday, Devine didn't have quite enough to beat Uvalde and fell 3-2.
Karter Brown was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple marked the first that he hit this season.
Meanwhile, Jefferson won against Sam Houston on Monday with 13 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Wednesday. Jefferson was the clear victors by a 13-2 margin over Lanier. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won six contests by eight runs or more so far this season.
Justin Ruiz made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. He has become a key player for Jefferson: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-6 otherwise. Ruiz was also big at the plate, firing off three triples, three runs, and one RBI while going 3-for-5. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in triples.
In other batting news, Aiden Urdiales was a standout: he went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted over his last 15 games. The team also got some help courtesy of Julian Calvario, who scored three runs while going 2-for-3.
Jefferson hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most four strikeouts in five consecutive matchups.
Devine's loss dropped their record down to 5-4-1. As for Jefferson, the win got them back to even at 7-7.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Devine hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .327. However, it's not like Jefferson struggles in that department as they've averaged .325. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Devine was able to grind out a solid victory over Jefferson in their previous matchup back in March of 2019, winning 6-2. Does Devine have another victory up their sleeve, or will Jefferson turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
