Basketball Game Preview: Mt. Vernon Mustangs vs. Solon Spartans

The Mt. Vernon Mustangs will head out on the road to square off against the Solon Spartans at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Mt. Vernon is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Marion just ended the team's four-game winning streak on Tuesday. They took a 65-46 bruising from the Wolves. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Mustangs came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Iowa basketball rankings (they are ranked 53rd, while the Wolves are ranked 210th).

Meanwhile, Solon waltzed into their contest on Tuesday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They took down the Mustangs 67-51. That's two games straight that the Spartans have won by exactly 16 points.

Solon's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-5. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.3 points per game. As for Mt. Vernon, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-2.

Mt. Vernon strolled past Solon in their previous meeting back in December of 2024 by a score of 54-40. The rematch might be a little tougher for Mt. Vernon since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
