Football Recap: Lincoln Northeast Rockets vs. Omaha North Vikings
After some red-hot attacks on offense in their last four matchups, Lincoln Northeast finally came back down to earth on Thursday. They had to suffer through a 42-7 loss at the hands of the Omaha North Vikings. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for the Rockets, who until this contest were averaging 15 points allowed.
Several Rockets players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Grant Matson, who threw for 127 yards and one touchdown, and also rushed for 48 yards.
This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Michael Valencia and Jaron Cannon. Valencia rushed for 110 yards and three scores on only nine carries while Cannon rushed for 136 yards and a pair of TDs on only 14 carries. Cannon's rushing production has been exceptional as that marked his eighth straight game with at least 104 rushing yards dating back to last season. Another big playmaker for Omaha North was Darion Jones, who returned a punt for a touchdown.
Having lost for the first time this season, Lincoln Northeast fell to 4-1. As for Omaha North, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 3-2.
We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Lincoln Northeast will square off against rival Lincoln Southwest at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Omaha North is set to face off against their familiar foe Buena Vista at 7:00 p.m. on October 3.
