League recap: El Monte's Alvarez delivers best pitching performance from past week

Johnny Alvarez was the best pitcher in Mission Valley this week, leading El Monte. He won one game and struck out four batters.

The Lions made the biggest jump in the national rankings, moving from 9,335 to 9,078 thanks to a 1-1 record over the past week. El Monte is currently sitting at No. 778 in the state of California, thanks to an overall record of 13-12.

The Lions boasted the best pitching over the past week, holding opponents to the league's fewest hits and issuing the fewest walks.

South El Monte's Mario Lopez was locked in this week, and led the league with a 1.000 average (1-for-1) over that span. His average for the season stands at .328, which ranks 18th in the league. Lopez has accumulated 20 base knocks this year so far.



El Monte's Alvarez led the league in strikeouts this week with four. With 62 strikeouts this year so far, he ranks second in the league.
