Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Newberry). They never let the Eastside Rams get on the board and left with a 16-0 victory on Thursday. The Panthers haven't had any issues with the Rams recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive win against them.
Gracie Mattson was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with three runs and one RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February.
In other batting news, Newberry got a massive performance out of Aubrey Mattson, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Mattson a new career-high. Olivia Tharp was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Newberry was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Eastside only posted a batting average of .250.
Newberry's victory bumped their record up to 15-4. As for Eastside, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 11 of their last 13 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-14-2 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newberry will venture away from home to square off against Gainesville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Panthers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Hurricanes have averaged an impressive 6.3 runs per game this season. As for Eastside, they are taking a road trip to take on Wildwood at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wildcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 18.67 runs per game on average), something the Rams will no doubt try to take advantage of.
