League recap: Mission win leads to rise in state rank

Mission moved up to 263 from 409 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 4A Region IV District 32. The Eagles climbed the ranks as a result of besting Roma 27-3.

Mission extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Gladiators, 27-3. The victory was the sixth in a row for Mario Pena's team.

Mercedes's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Isaiah Garza threw for 86 and one touchdown and Carlos Quintanilla had 65 yards receiving. On the ground Mathew Guzman chipped in 175 yards. Niko Ortiz helped Mercedes' passing attack out by catching one ball for 17 yards.

Veterans Memorial's Santos Villarreal and Isaac Guerrero have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Villarreal has thrown for 1296 yards this season, while Guerrero has 27 catches for 492 yards. The Tigers' Guzman leads the league in rushing yards with 833.

A big matchup in 4A Region IV District 32 this week will be when Mercedes takes on Valley View. Michael Uribe's team is in second place, while the Tigers are in third place.

The Tigers were the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to second in the league. Mercedes beat Rio Grande City 40-14 earlier in the week.
