The Vermilion Sailors are taking a road trip to face off against the Edison Chargers at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Vermilion has given up an average of 16.7 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Vermilion is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They walked away with a 16-11 win over Willard on Monday. With that victory, the Sailors brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Jilly Leimbach was incredible, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Alyssa Zsebik was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with three RBI and two runs.
Vermilion always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .524. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Edison hadn't done well against Margaretta recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. The Chargers blew past the Polar Bears 17-3. The Chargers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by seven runs or more this season.
Abby Cloud made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Peyton Taylor, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Natalie Desautels, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Edison is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. Vermilion's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-6.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Vermilion hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .313. However, it's not like Edison struggles in that department as they've averaged .381. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Vermilion might still be hurting after the 24-1 defeat they got from Edison in their previous matchup back in March. Can the Sailors avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
