Softball Recap: Make It Five in a Row for Fitch

Fitch lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Stonington, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Thursday's matchup. The Falcons never let the Bears get on the board and left with a 7-0 victory on Thursday. The Falcons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by six runs or more this season.

Hailey Merrill made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 14 over seven innings pitched. Those 14 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Marcella Rentas, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Grace Cosmopoulos was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.

Fitch kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

The win was the fifth in a row for Fitch, bringing their record up to 7-3. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Stonington, their loss ended a six-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 4-2.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Fitch will welcome Griswold at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Stonington, they will host Norwich Free Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
