Preview: Cheylin Cougars vs. Cunningham Wildcats
The Cheylin Cougars are on the road again on Saturday and play against the Cunningham Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. on November 25th. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
With a playoff game on the line, Cheylin rose to the challenge on Friday. They breezed by the Blue Jays on the road to the tune of 66-27.
Cheylin's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Logan McCarty, who threw for 363 yards and four touchdowns on only 19 passes, and also rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 carries. McCarty hasn't dropped below two rushing touchdowns for three straight games. Pablo Bermudez was in the mix as well, providing Cheylin with four touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Cunningham came tearing into Friday's matchup with ten straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 57 points) and they left with even more momentum. They claimed a resounding 45-6 victory over Tescott on the road. Cunningham's offense checked out after the first half but had enough points banked to take the game anyway.
Cunningham got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Will Wegerer out in front who threw for 246 yards and four touchdowns while completing 81.8% of his passes. Luke Albers was another key contributor, picking up 130 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Their wins bumped Cheylin to 11-0 and Ashland to 9-2.
Cheylin was taken down by Cunningham 44-15 in their previous matchup back in October of 2021. Thankfully for Cheylin, Trey DeWeese (who threw for 78 yards and four touchdowns, and also picked up 83 receiving yards) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
