Basketball Game Preview: Burkeville Mustangs vs. Goodrich Hornets

Burkeville has gone 8-2 against Goodrich recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Burkeville Mustangs will look to defend their home court against the Goodrich Hornets at 7:30 p.m. Burkeville will be strutting in after a victory while Goodrich will be coming in after a loss.

Having struggled with five defeats in a row, Burkeville turned things around against High Island on Friday. They rang in the new year with a 47-40 win over the Cardinals.

Burkeville's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Matthew Smith, who posted 12 points and four steals. Smith is crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Kalep Adams, who posted eight points in addition to six rebounds and five assists.

Burkeville was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Goodrich was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 29th straight loss dating back to last season. They were outmatched by Spurger and fell 68-23. That's two games in a row now that the Hornets have lost by exactly 45 points.

Burkeville's victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 3-10. As for Goodrich, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-15.

Everything went Burkeville's way against Goodrich when the teams last played back in January of 2024, as Burkeville made off with a 69-47 win. Does Burkeville have another victory up their sleeve, or will Goodrich turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
