The Oceanside Collegiate Academy Landsharks will challenge the Covenant Day Lions at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Oceanside Collegiate Academy sitting on 17 straight wins dating back to last season and Covenant Day on five.
While Oceanside Collegiate Academy's victory against Beaufort wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Oceanside Collegiate Academy won by a run and slipped past Beaufort 4-3.
Tyler Mellison looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Scott Henry, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That stolen base was his first of the season. Aiden Brusman was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Covenant Day). Their pitchers stepped up to hand Goose Creek a 15-0 shutout on Monday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Lions considering their two-run performance the match before.
Mikey Scaletta was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). Scaletta was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Zeb Engstrom was incredible, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was James Cosper, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Covenant Day always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Oceanside Collegiate Academy's win was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-0. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.5 runs over those games. As for Covenant Day, their victory bumped their record up to 7-1.
