The Grossmont Foothillers will square off against the Helix Highlanders at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Grossmont made up a huge gap compared to their last game against El Capitan, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Foothillers fell just short of the Vaqueros by a score of 6-4 on Monday. The Foothillers have struggled against the Vaqueros recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.
Grossmont saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nakhia Lee, who went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Helix, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They never let Mount Miguel get on the board and left with a 19-0 win on Friday. The Highlanders might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.
Katelyn Woodland tossed a big game, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched.
At the plate, Helix let Lauren Farace and LaNiah Broom run wild. Farace went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Broom went 2-for-3 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most hits Broom has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Clarissa Torres, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Helix hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least five batters in eight consecutive contests.
Helix has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Grossmont, their loss dropped their record down to 7-14-1.
Wednesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Grossmont hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .346. However, it's not like Helix struggles in that department as they've averaged .384. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Grossmont was able to grind out a solid win over Helix in their previous matchup back in May of 2023, winning 7-3. Do the Foothillers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Highlanders turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
