Basketball Recap: Lake Wales Extends Winning Streak to Three

It's playoff time, and Lake Wales had no trouble coming through when it counted. They blew past the Sebring Blue Streaks 57-33 on Saturday. The Highlanders have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten matchups by 23 points or more this season.

Lake Wales' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tateyanna Mickel led the charge by putting up 17 points in addition to five assists and five steals. Vanessa Squire was another key player, posting 14 points.

Despite the loss, Sebring saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Molly Jane Zwayer almost dropped a triple-double with 18 points, nine boards, and 11 blocks. Zwayer has been hot for a while, having posted two or more blocks the last 25 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Adriana Maldonado, who posted nine points.

The victory (which was Lake Wales' third in a row) raised their record to 16-8. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 26.3 points over those games. As for Sebring, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 13-9 record this season.

Looking ahead, Lake Wales will square off against Gateway at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Gateway is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 67.3 points per game this season. Sebring does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
