Reed-Custer is 2-8 against Wilmington since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Comets will head out to square off against the Wildcats at 4:30 p.m.
Reed-Custer came into their game on Thursday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They lost 12-0 to Morris.
Meanwhile, Wilmington had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Blazing Trojan as they made off with a 19-1 win. Considering the Wildcats have won 14 contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Meredith Marquardt was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (four). She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs.
In other pitching news, Taryn Gilbert looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Molly Southall, who fired off two home runs, seven RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-3. Those seven RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Nina Egizio, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base.
Wilmington always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .833. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Wilmington's record now sits at 20-5. As for Reed-Custer, their loss dropped their record down to 14-8.
Reed-Custer might still be hurting after the 15-3 defeat they got from Wilmington when the teams last played last Tuesday. Can the Comets avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
